High School Beginnings
Theresa and Larry’s story begins in the early 1970s, when both attended Edmonds High School as part of the class of 1973. Theresa grew up in Edmonds and was well-acquainted with many people, while Larry, whose family moved frequently due to his father’s Air Force career, was new to the area and didn’t know anyone — he was the “new kid in town.”
Memories from the Past
More than fifty years later, memories from those advaenturous high school years have become a little hazy. Although Theresa and Larry never dated during high school, they recall frequently flirting, having quiet crushes on one another, and signing each other’s yearbooks as seniors. Both referenced a class they apparently attended together called “Contemporary Problems,” though neither can actually remember the class itself. (Theresa: “Why didn’t you ever ask me out, Larry?” Larry: “You were out of my league.”)
Paths Cross After Graduation
After finishing high school, both attended Washington State University. According to Theresa, their paths crossed in the Cougar Union Building, though Larry doesn’t recall this encounter. (Theresa: “You don’t remember talking to me?”)
Separate Journeys
For the next five decades, Theresa and Larry led separate lives—getting married, raising children and grandchildren, and eventually each experiencing the loss of a spouse.
Reconnection and New Beginnings
About three and a half years ago, Theresa and Larry reconnected briefly at a monthly high school friends’ gathering at a restaurant in Edmonds. Seeing Larry again made Theresa feel like a giddy teenager. Although they only exchanged greetings, a similar encounter happened two months later. (Theresa: “You ignored me again!”) This time, Theresa decided to be bold – she got his number from her “I know everyone in Edmonds” Diana - and texted Larry the next day, inviting him to “hang out sometime.” After a 5 hour wait (he was working!) Larry finally responded to her text, and we scheduled their first date for happy hour in Seattle the following week. We talked for hours, finally left only to find our cars parked next to each other on the street, and Larry went in for a kiss. Fireworks for Theresa - and we have been together ever since.
Shared Passions
Over the past three years, we have discovered mutual passions for snow skiing, bike riding, boating, and traveling internationally. We have skied together at Stevens Pass, Schweitzer, Mt. Bachelor, Vail and Sun Valley – including 5 weeks at Sun Valley this past February.
We have done bike tours together in Japan and Croatia, and art workshop in France, and have also traveled to Italy and Costa Rico. In July and August we will be on a two month boat cruise to the San Juan and Gulf Islands, Desolation Sound and the Sunshine Coast. Later this year we are going on a yoga retreat in India, and then next year a family trip to Norway.
Here's to many more years of adventures and lasting memories together!
